After food, clothing, and shelter, I’m not sure what is a more important need for kids than education. And the foundation for all formal education is reading.  This is why we are passionate about literacy in Montgomery County. But there is a back story.  Literacy was a problem BEFORE the pandemic.  We haven’t been teaching reading right.  As a country.  And those without resources, as usual, have borne the brunt of our negligence. On Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Universities of Shady Grove, we will be watching the new documentary that tells the story we don’t want to hear: that we haven’t been teaching our kids to read! The Right to Read is a documentary that shows that literacy is a civil right that has been denied so many of our kids despite the relative wealth of our country.  See how the science of reading got overlooked for more fashionable ways of approaching reading which have inadvertently left children without means illiterate and unable to function in society. “THE RIGHT TO READ” EXCLUSIVE SCREENING HOSTED BY ADVANCING BLACK LIVES for EDUCATION (A.B.L.E.),SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2:00 – 4:00 P.M.@ UNIVERSITIES OF SHADY GROVE, 9630 Gudelsky Drive Rockville, MD 20850.
